Emily, who are you? Will you join the wind and me on the mountains?

I read this poem today (at bottom of post). It stuns me. The poet, Emily Dickinson, stuns me.

I have to admit, though I don't like to suggest it, that I think she is copying me.

She has tried to disguise it by putting in a lot of dashes, but there is no ignoring the fact that she refers to the wind and that it is, I feel, quite full of arty vagueness. I don't feel that she is as good as me at the arty vagueness, but that goes without saying anyway.

I am not sure whether to be flattered or whether to contact her and demand that she stop writing.

I will have to think about this for a while. I don't want to offend her.

I'm going to go up the nearest mountain and yodel a bit - that usually helps me make decisions.

480

"Why do I love" You, Sir?
Because—
The Wind does not require the Grass
To answer—Wherefore when He pass
She cannot keep Her place.

Because He knows—and
Do not You—
And We know not—
Enough for Us
The Wisdom it be so—

The Lightning—never asked an Eye
Wherefore it shut—when He was by—
Because He knows it cannot speak—
And reasons not contained—
—Of Talk—
There be—preferred by Daintier Folk—

The Sunrise—Sire—compelleth Me—
Because He's Sunrise—and I see—
Therefore—Then—
I love Thee—

Emily Dickinson

Please don't touch me with your skin...

why does the sun rise? remember me always dear for I will return --

I got a horrible thing in my mail today. Someone anonymously sent me an extract from one of most incredible poems, 'Orpheus and Eurydice,' as follows:

What she dreamed, as she watched him turning with the bend in the road
(can you
understand this?)--what she dreamed

was of disappearing into the seen

It had been written over, in a thick red pen, "NO I FUCKING CANNOT UNDERSTAND THIS. POET, MY ASS."

I don't understand how someone could do that. I know that poem is wonderful - it has so much arty vagueness in it. You are not meant to understand it, really.

Shall I move the flowers again?
Shall I put them further to the left
into the light?

I think I shall.
I think I should.
I think I could.
I think I will.
I think I think.

But do you?
